"The important thing is the spices. A man can live on packaged food from here 'til Judgment Day if he's got enough rosemary." - Shepard Book, Firefly
The quote may be from science fiction but no truer words have ever been spoken. A good selection of spices and herbs, be it dry or fresh, make for the best tasting food.
Bulk buying the spices is a good idea for some people, but I find it easiest to just pick up what you need when you make a new dish. You're collection will grow quickly. May I warn you now, they may stack up and takeover your cupboard!
The Equipment
I'm going to try my hardest to be a minimalist with fancy kitchenware. I can't stand it when I'm sat in my student house looking at a recipe that says "Take your blender" or "Crush with your pestle and mortar".
There has been more than one occasion where I have rolled out pastry with the cling film roll. Sometimes you do need special equipment in the kitchen, it certainly makes life easier but you can usually keep it reasonably minimal and still get great results.
If you're going to spend money on something for your kitchen, the main thing I would advise is one good sharp knife. I have one from John Lewis with roughly a 4inch serrated blade and it does everything, from slicing bread to cutting chicken. It's even sharp enough to get through a large butternut squash without me damaging myself trying to use brute force. Anyone who's tried getting into a hefty vegetable with a blunt knife will know what I mean...I wouldn't recommend it!
